Rutledge
The town of Rutledge is known to be part of Crenshaw County, in the state of Alabama. Even for a town that is 3.3 square miles in length, the population is over 470 people, who are spread out over 201 households, and throughout 127 families. This is a great place to bring the family if you just want to get away from all of the hustle and bustle of your day job and rather, take it down a notch. Even though this town is rather sleepy, with a tranquil, small-town atmosphere, there is plenty of history and plenty of things to do that surround the greater area of Rutledge.
The town first started by being known as Barber's Crossroads, when it was settled by Jared Phelps Barber. However, in 1867, it was renamed to Rutledge in honor of Captain Henry Rutledge, Company H. 59th Alabama Infantry, CSA and that was what seemed to stick, but it was not before one other name change. As the first county of Crenshaw, there was also a brief period of time where the name Crenshaw also applied to the town, between 1867 and 1893.
