Massapequa
Wantagh is a small hamlet within Hempstead, New York on the southwestern side of Long Island. The city, along with its two neighbors, makes up the Nassau County. The name “Wantagh” is Native American in origin. Wantagh was named after the Merokee (or Merikoke) chief Wantagh, who later went on to become the grand sachem of the Montauk tribe from 1651 to 1658. Wantagh is nicknamed the “Gateway to Jones Beach.” The city was also named Jerusalem, but the name was changed back after the Revolutionary War ended in order to avoid confusion with another small village sharing the same name. Wantagh has been the focal point for much historic activity, and houses nine of Nassau County's twenty-five historic markers. The county has a climate typical of the northeast United States, with warm, humid summers and cool, wet winters. Temperatures here can reach as low as the twenties in the winter, and as high as the eighties in the summer.
