South San Francisco
South San Francisco is located to the south of San Francisco, as its name implies, but it is an independent city. It is part of the San Francisco Peninsula within San Mateo County of California. The city has a total area of just over 30 square miles and a population of about 64,000 residents. Because of its location, South San Francisco is frequently referred to by the nickname “South City”. One interesting thing to note, however, is that although South San Francisco is in fact to the south of San Francisco, the two cities are not connected as Brisbane separates them from each other.
South San Francisco has the history of being an industrial city and in fact, there is a sign on Signal Hill announcing it. On this hill is the famous South San Francisco Hillside Sign saying “South San Francisco, The Industrial City.” This sign has even been listed as part of the National Register of Historic Places.
Although it is not as large a tourist destination as nearby San Francisco, South San Francisco does have its fair share of attractions with its Downtown area being a popular destination. There is also a local farmer’s market during the summer months and multiple parks and pathways throughout the city.
